Rock Solid: Rocco Pitches T-Bones to Eighth Straight Win

ZION, Ill. – Mike Rocco (3-2) surrendered just one run over six solid innings for the Kansas City T-Bones (56-38) Wednesday night as they defeated the Lake County Fielders (38-57), 10-2, to extend their season-high win streak to eight games. Rocco surrendered his lone run in the third inning when Jeff Dunbar began the frame with a solo home run, his 15th of the season. The right-hander retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced, leaving after a perfect sixth inning. Rocco earned the victory after allowing the one run on four hits while striking out five in six innings of work.
RedHawks Rebound With 6-3 Win at Silver Cross Field
JOLIET, IL – A three run seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (57-37) earned a 6-3 victory Wednesday night over the Joliet JackHammers (50-45) in front of 3,363 fans at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers magic number to clinch a playoff spot remained at two games after Winnipeg and Rockford were rained out. Jay Cox gave the RedHawks the lead for good in the seventh with a solo home run against Todd Privett (9-5). Kole Zimmerman added another blast to bounce Privett and Wes Alsup came out of the bullpen. The reliever walked Zach Penprase, who then stole second and scored on a single by Mike Coles for a 6-3 lead.
Wednesday night's game between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the Rockford RiverHawks has been rained out. The two clubs will play a DH on Thursday night beginning at 5:05 PM at Rockford's Road Ranger Stadium. It will be the last home date of the 2010 season for the RiverHawks.
JOLIET, IL – Devin Anderson won his fourth straight start and the Joliet JackHammers (50-44) earned their 50th win of the season, courtesy of a 4-1 victory Tuesday night over the first place Fargo – Moorhead RedHawks (56-37) in front of 3,422 fans at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers evened up their record at 5-5 against the RedHawks with two games left in the season series. Joliet plated solo tallies in the first and second innings for an early 2-0 lead. The first three reached base in the first against Matt Zoltak (1-1).
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Kansas City T-Bones (55-38) pushed their win streak to a season-high seven games Tuesday night with a 5-3 victory over the Lake County Fielders (38-56) to begin their final road series of the regular season. Kansas City is now one game behind the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in a battle for the top spot in the league. The Fielders took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Reid Santos (6-5) on an RBI groundout by Joshua Short. Kansas City tied the game at one against John Brownell (3-9) on a solo home run by Dwayne White in the top of the second, but Lake County reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Higgins.
RAILCATS SCORE EIGHT UNANSWERED RUNS, DROP FLYERS 8-2
Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats struck for eight straight runs with two outs over four straight innings to come from behind and beat the Schaumburg Flyers 8-2 Tuesday night at U. S. Steel Yard, shrinking the RailCats magic number to clinch a sixth straight playoff berth to two. After the Flyers scored runs in the first and third innings, the RailCats rallied for one in the fifth, two in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth to win for just the third time in their last 10 games. The win, coupled with a Rockford win over Winnipeg, only shrunk the RailCats magic number by one but did officially eliminate the Goldeyes from playoff contention. The 'Cats will clinch a postseason berth with a win Wednesday and a Rockford loss.
LOVES PARK, Ill. – Kyle Wright brightened the Rockford RiverHawks’ dimming hope for a Northern League playoff berth by ending the Winnipeg Goldeyes’ chance for postseason play. Wright pitched a four-hitter and shut out the Goldeyes, 7-0, at Road Ranger Stadium. Rich Austin hit his eighth home run, in front of 2,289.
FLYERS CONTINUE TO WIN; NOW THEY ARE IN A SPOILER ROLE
GARY, Ind. — Chris Schultz doubled to right with two outs to score Ron Bourquin from first in the top of the 12th inning and send the Schaumburg Flyers to a dramatic 4-3 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats Monday night at U. S. Steel Yard in the opener of a four-game series. The loss kept the RailCats magic number to clinch a sixth straight playoff berth at three and was the ‘Cats seventh loss in their last nine games. The RailCats had very few scoring chances Monday, recording only one hit after the fifth inning – Flyers pitching retired 15 in a row at one point – and needing their own herculean relief effort to keep the game tied.

S. Steel Yard. Joliet won two of three in the series to take over third place in the Northern League standings, one half-game ahead of the RailCats although the teams are tied in the loss column. The defeat for the RailCats was their sixth in the last eight games and marked the third straight series loss for the ‘Cats. The RailCats magic number to clinch a sixth straight playoff berth remains at four following the loss, pending the outcome of tonight’s Kansas City-Rockford game.
LOVES PARK, Ill. – Kansas City completed a four-game series sweep of the Rockford RiverHawks with a repeat power performance from the heart of its lineup.
Gabriel Martinez, Ray Sadler and Jim Fasano each homered on Sunday as the T-Bones beat the RiverHawks, 7-4, at Road Ranger Stadium.
KC hit 15 homers and outscored Rockford, 40-15, in the series. Martinez hit five home runs in the last three games, Sadler homered each of the four games and Fasano hit a home run in each of the last two games.
Jake Eigsti and Jono Brooks each homered for the RiverHawks, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,912.
Flyers sweep Fielders With 9-4 Sunday Afternoon Win at Alexian Field

SCHAUMBURG, IL - The first three batters set the tone for the Flyers as Travis Brown led off with a triple. Ruddy Yan followed with a RBI single and Kit Pellow stepped up next with a two run blast to left field for an early 3-0 lead. The Flyers would tack on another run in the second inning with another RBI single from Ruddy Yan. The Fielders would get their four runs sparingly in the game as Higgins led off in the third inning with a double and would eventually come to score. Chris Schultz got the hitting going again in the 4th inning. A big two RBI double followed by Ruddy Yan's third RBI single would make the game 7-1 after four innings.
GOLDEYES BLANK REDHAWKS BEHIND ACE In front of 7110 at Canwest Park 2010 Finale
The Goldeyes starter took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, as the Fish blanked the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-0 Sunday afternoon. Walker, who struck out 11 Fargo batters in the game, watched Carlo Cota hit a single to left field to break up the no-no. It’s the first time in franchise history that a Goldeyes pitcher has tossed a one-hitter. Walker also matched a Winnipeg record with six consecutive strikeouts in the game.
Guerrero Leads Gary to 4-3 Walk Off Victory Over Joliet
GARY, IN – Cristian Guerrero lined a single to left to score Mike Massaro from second as the Gary SouthShore RailCats (48-43) moved back into third place with a 4-3 victory Saturday night over the Joliet JackHammers (48-44) at U. S. Steel Yard. The RailCats are a half game up on the JackHammers for third place. Mike Massaro led off the ninth with a walk against Erik Hamren (0-2). Jay Pecci singled past a charging Brad Correll from third to put two runners on with nobody out. Griffin Bailey came on and Guerrero singled into left field, scoring Massaro just ahead of the throw from Jonathan Wyatt for the victory.
SCHAUMBURG, IL - Kit Pellow started off the Flyers with a solo home run following the Fielders early run in the first inning. The Flyers bats were quiet after Pellow, however, as they would not score until the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mario Delgado and Joey Gomes had back to back doubles, Gomes getting his 50th RBI of the season bringing in Delgado.
Justin James joins Oakland for final month of season
Former Kansas City T-Bones pitcher Justin James has earned a promotion to the major leagues with the Oakland Athletics. James is the first Northern Leaguer to earn a promotion to the major leagues in the same season his contract was purchased. James, 29, joined the Double-A Midland RockHounds this season after having his contract purchased from Kansas City on June 17, 2010. He held a 1-0 record and 2.29 ERA in 12 appearances for the RockHounds before being called up to Triple-A Sacramento on July 22. James appeared in 28 games between the two levels, posting an overall record of 2-1 with five saves and a 1.83 ERA in 39 and one-thirds total innings.
Schaumburg RHP Brian McCullough Named Pitcher of the Month (AUGUST)
McCullough, who has only allowed one earned run since August 1st, posted a 3-0 record with a 1.33 ERA for the Schaumburg Flyers in the month of August on his way to being named Northern League Pitcher of the Month. He appeared in 12 games for the Flyers and tied for the league lead with five saves in the month. Overall, he leads Schaumburg in appearances (31) and saves (5), and is third on the team in wins (5). In August, the 25-year-old right-hander only yielded 15 hits over 20.1 innings while striking out 12 and walking only seven. On the season, he has only gone more than fours days without pitching three times (once over the all-star break). The 5-11, 190-pounder, signed with Schaumburg on April 23rd, 2010.
KANSAS CITY ALL-STAR 2B JACOB BLACKWOOD NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH (AUGUST)
Blackwood, who currently is in position to win the Northern League Triple Crown, collected a league-high 44 hits in the month of August. He batted .370 (44-for-119) with seven doubles and 12 home runs, while posting 26 runs scored and 27 RBI in the month. He collected at least one hit in 23 of 28 games, including a 10-game span where he smacked eight home runs. On the season, Blackwood leads the league in batting (.344), home runs (30), and RBI (84). The Northern League has not seen a Triple Crown winner since Anthony Lewis of the Duluth-Superior Dukes in 2000 accomplished the feat.
KC SLUGGER GABRIEL MARTINEZ NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK (for the week ended AUG 29th)
Martinez, who was just acquired by the T-Bones on August 24th, batted .423 (11-for-26) with two doubles, six home runs, and 13 RBI in six games played during the week. He also scored a league-high 11 runs in that span. Since he joined Kansas City, the T-Bones have won six straight games and scored 57 runs. He had back-to-back games with two home runs and hit five round-trippers over three consecutive games. The 6-2, 215-pound first baseman/designated hitter was signed by the Kansas City T-Bones on the final day allowed to make roster moves in the 2010 Northern League season.
JOLIET RHP BEAR BAY NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK (for the week ended AUG 29th)
Bay, who ranks second in the Northern League with 107 strikeouts, went 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA during the week for the Joliet JackHammers. In two starts for the ‘Hammers, he hurled 14 innings yielding only two runs on 13 hits while striking out 17. He shutdown Schaumburg on August 24th on one run over six innings and followed it up with eight innings of one-run ball versus Gary SouthShore five days later. He has now won four straight games and is ranked among the league leaders in Strikeouts (2nd), ERA (5th), and Wins (7th).
Zion, IL. - The Lake County Fielders minor league baseball team announced today that Field Manager Fran Riordan will be returning for the team's second season in 2011. The expansion Fielders are currently playing in their inaugural Northern League season in Zion, IL. "When you think of the challenges Fran faced this season, he did a remarkable job," said team Chairman Rich Ehrenreich. "Fran is first class, and our players mirrored that both on and off the field."

FARGO, N.D. – The first step in defending the Northern League Championship is complete for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Friday night’s 3-0 win over Winnipeg, coupled with a loss by the Rockford RiverHawks, means the RedHawks have clinched a spot in the 2010 Northern League Playoffs. It’s the 14th time in 15 years that Fargo-Moorhead has appeared in the post-season.
KC Veteran Outfielder Ray Sadler Named Player of the Week (for the week ending AUG 22nd)
Sadler, who receives the Player of the Week honor for the second time in 2010 (June 28th), batted .458 (11-for-24) with a double, a triple, three home runs, and seven RBI in six games played during the week. He also scored four runs and stole a base in that span. He had the best game of the week on August 16th versus Winnipeg when he went 4-for-5 with two home runs, six RBI and 12 total bases. In all, he had four multi-hit games on the week. The 6-1, 205-pound former Major Leaguer was signed by the Kansas City T-Bones on March 1st, 2010 after playing last year with both the Houston and Tampa Bay organizations.
Joliet LHP Devin Anderson Named Pitcher of the Week (for the week ended AUG 22nd)
Anderson, who raised his record to 5-4 on the season, went 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA during the week for the JackHammers. In two starts, he hurled 15 innings yielding only three earned runs on 13 hits while striking out four. On August 16th versus Lake County, he went the distance in a seven-inning affair of a 7-2 Joliet victory. It was his first complete game of the season and his career. In his other outing of the week five days later, he yielded only one earned run over five innings to the Kansas City T-Bones, the league’s top hitting offense.
Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced that the baseball club has signed veteran position player Donzell McDonald.
McDonald, 35, has spent the majority of this season in the Triple-A Mexican League with the Acereros de Monclova (Monclova Steelers). He hit .301 in 105 games with 12 home runs and 65 RBI. A product of Long Beach, Cali., McDonald has 15 games of Major League experience on his resume. In 2001, he appeared in five games with the New York Yankees, going one-for-three at the plate.
The Rockford RiverHawks have signed veteran outfielder Victor Diaz, a former major-leaguer.
LOVES PARK, Ill. – Diaz, a career .289 hitter, will join Rockford for the playoff push. The RiverHawks are two games behind fourth-place Joliet for the final Northern League playoff spot. Diaz hit .298 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI in 105 games this summer for Veracruz of the Mexican League. He was named a Mexican League all-star.
O’Sullivan has an oblique injury and has played once in the last nine days. The veteran was hitting .287 with a team-high 13 home runs and 50 RBI. Raisbeck hit .243 with a homer and 12 RBI in 53 games earlier this season with St. George of the independent Golden League. The 24-year-old is a former St. Ambrose University athlete.
JOLIET, IL- You may have seen her around town or at the ballpark, Juliet, is the newest addition to the JackHammers family. The large furry mascot has been sighted at the ballpark multiple times since last fall and was introduced July 31, 2010. The “Smart Shopper” mascot is sponsored by mygofer.com and she sports a jersey with the company’s logo and a skirt.
Schaumburg All-Star RHP Dustin Glant Named Player of the Week (for the week ended AUG 15th)
Glant, who has won more than a quarter of his team’s victories in 2010, went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA during the week for the Flyers. In two starts, he hurled 15 innings yielding only three runs on 12 hits while striking out eight. On August 14th versus Joliet, he went the distance in a seven-inning affair earning his eighth victory of the season and third complete game. Earlier in the week he went eight innings allowing only three runs to the Rockford RiverHawks in a 4-3 Schaumburg victory.
